Colette Black: Chair of UK Fire Cadets

Headshot with fire appliance

Hi, I am Colette and I am the Chairperson for our Fire Cadets.  I am delighted to be working with the UK Fire Cadet team to support and lead us through this exciting period.  Seeing young people flourish is a huge motivation for me and I am inspired by the difference that Fire Cadets already makes to the people and communities we serve.

The direction of my own life was ‘reset’ as a teenager by being part of a youth group.  Having a 'place to belong', structure, responsible role models and support was life changing for me. We know that our young people rise and flourish when we provide a setting for them to do so.  Our Fire Cadets and the team that support them are an absolute inspiration - I am proud to be part of it.

Alongside my role as Chairperson,  I am also the Director of People Services, Assistant Chief Executive, for Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Outside of the Fire and Rescue Service, I am Chair of the Board for a charity which offers respite care and outreach services.  I am at my happiest when I am home being 'Mum' to my two teens and wife to Ian.  I love dark chocolate and am usually (embarrassingly for the children) first on any available dance floor.

I am currently seconded from the Scottish Fire and Rescue my background is in Community Development with a focus on youthwork.  I have worked in the the fire sector since 2004, firstly for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue and for the Scottish Service since its inception in 2013.  After a spell as Vice chair in 2018 I have now taken on the challenge of this seconded role to ensure that UK Fire Cadets become one of the main uniformed youth organisations in the UK, empowering young people to be the best they can be.
